Alick Dangot production at Nigeria business 20bn oil refinery

Getty Images Aliko Dangote made his money through sugar and cement Petrol production at Nigerian business tycoon Aliko Dangote’s $20bn (£15.5bn) state-of-the-art oil refinery ought to be some of the best business news Nigeria has had in years. But many Nigerians will judge its success on two key questions - firstly: "Will I get cheaper petrol?" Sorry, but probably no - unless the international price of crude drops. And secondly: "Will I still have to spend hours watching my hair turn grey in a hypertension-inducing fuel queue?" Hopefully those days are gone but it might partly depend on the behaviour of what Mr Dangote calls "the oil mafia". For much of the time since oil was first discovered in Nigeria in 1956, the downstream sector, which includes the stage when crude is refined into petrol and other products, has been a cesspit of shady deals with successive governments heavily involved. It has always been impossible to follow the money, but you know th...

US CENTCOM announces deployment of B-52 bombers to Middle East amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel

The United States military announced on Friday that it would deploy additional forces and equipment to the Middle East in light of rising tensions between Iran and Israel.  Pentagon Spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated: “In keeping with our commitments to the protection of U.S. citizens and forces in the Middle East, the defense of Israel, and de-escalation through deterrence and diplomacy, the Secretary of Defense ordered the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadron and tanker aircraft, and several U.S. Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region.” Ryder noted that the deployment of forces would coincide with the departure of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group from the region, which arrived in the region in August.  Ryder said the deployment of the additional forces builds on “the recent decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to Israel, as well as DoD's sustained Amp...

The president of Cameroon makes a change of military leaders after the revolution in Gabon

Getty Images Copyright: Getty Images One of the longest-serving presidents in Africa has appointed new military leaders on the same day the army took power in neighboring Gabon. President Paul Biya of Cameroon has made major changes to his country's defense ministry and armed forces on Wednesday. No reason was given for the move. Colonel Cyrille Guemo, Director of Communications at the Ministry of Defense of Cameroon, has told the Turkish news agency that the new appointment has been on the president's table for many days. But given the "tsunami of military coups that are sweeping through France's former colonies... leaders who have been in power for too long" should be worried, says David Otto, a security expert. "The young generation that is made up of military leaders does not tolerate regimes that operate in some kind of dynasty," Mr Otto said. Although Mr Biya's presidency was initially threatened when the military tried to seize power soon afte...

Nigeria healthy service disrupt afte as strike starts

Medical services have been disrupted again in Nigeria as healthcare workers in public hospitals have gone on an indefinite strike over issues relating to pay and welfare. The Joint Health Sector Unions (Johesu) said they had given the government a two-week ultimatum to meet their demands but nothing was done. Johesu is the association of health workers apart from doctors, dentists and nurses. They are in charge of patients' records, laboratories and other medical services in government-owned hospitals. The health workers are asking for the immediate approval and implementation of an agreed salary structure, immediate payment of outstanding allowances and a review of the retirement age among other issues. This comes just three days before the end of President Muhammadu Buhari's second term in office. Johesu national vice-president Dr Obinna Ogbonna told the BBC that the incoming government should be ready to do the right thing. "Let the new government inherit the strike. Af...

Tanzania president appeared very keen on smashing corruption

DODOMA, Tanzania (AP) - At first, Tanzania's new president appeared keen on smashing corruption and wasteful government spending, capturing the admiration of many in this East African country with austerity measures like rarely traveling abroad. Then came President John Pombe Magufuli's more startling decrees. He banned all opposition rallies until 2024, when the next election is due. He approved a tough new cybercrime law under which some Tanzanians have been charged with insulting him in WhatsApp chats. Less than a year after his election, Magufuli has split public opinion with what some describe as undemocratic attempts to reform the government. Others see them as exhilarating. The 56-year-old Magufuli has left the country only twice, to Rwanda and Uganda, since he became president, saying the savings should be directed toward social services, such as health care, to the poorest Tanzanians. Government officials must obtain his permission before traveling abroad, and wh...
